Sickening surge: Children hospitalisations spike in SA

Hospitalisations in South Australia due to a respiratory disease, which affects children at higher rates and can be fatal, have skyrocketed in the past year.

There have been 78 hospitalisations at the Women’s and Children’s hospital due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae from July 2023 to March this year, after only one case was recorded in the same period last year.

The disease is a common cause of pneumonia with lung inflammation, bronchitis and a sore throat but symptoms in rare severe cases can be life-threatening.
