Baby Ivy was 10 weeks old when she was hospitalised with the flu — and months after her recovery, she is still too young to get the vaccine.
She turned five months old on Tuesday and is one of more than 20,000 South Australians who have contracted the disease during this deadly flu season, prompting some to question whether a second vaccine is necessary following an early start to the season.
Her mother, Kendall Marriott, told the ABC it started with a fever and ended with a three-day hospitalisation, her family in quarantine and an almighty scare.
After taking her daughter to see a GP following the fever, she was told to keep an eye on her fluids.
"It got to a point overnight where there was no wet nappies, it was all dry, and then the next morning she still had a fever," she said.
She took her to Flinders Medical Centre where she was later diagnosed with Influenza A.
"She was way more dehydrated than they realised and it took about an hour for them to get a drip into her arm," she said.
