Metropolitan Fire Service crews and police were called to the post office on King William St and Franklin St at 12.45pm when the envelope was located.
While the exact nature of the substance is still being determined it is believed to have been either sugar or salt.
MFS have completed initial testing and are continuing to analyse the substance. It’s not believed to be dangerous.
