The man from nearby Smithfield Plains was hit just after 10:00pm at the station in Adelaide's north.
Police are investigating the incident.
"Sadly, the 40-year-old Smithfield Plains man was pronounced dead at the scene," police said in a statement
"There are robust processes in place to provide support for train drivers should instances such as this occur, including professional counselling and internal support.
"These events are traumatic for all involved and as trains cannot swerve and can take long distances to stop, there is little a driver can do to avoid a collision if someone in on the track."
Services have resumed this morning and police are preparing a report for the coroner.
